Soul Muffins

It's a tradition, a ritual and a way of survival really...I need something quick, easy to grab n' go if  I'm on the run, or just a midnight snack. I usually sing when in the process of folding all the ingredients, which makes the muffins extra rich in energy...really! So for those of you who I know, or don't know that stumbled upon this blog by sheer curiosity, i will be sharing with you my Soul Muffin recipe...Soul is not for me alone so I'm okay with giving away my recipe for gold. Please enjoy and let me know how it turned out. -
Ania Soul Muffins

2 Ripe Bananas
1 cup Almond Milk
1/2 cup oil (olive, sunflower or what u like)
1tsp pure vanilla extract
1/4 cup molasses

2cups Whole Wheat or Spelt Flour
1/2 cup oats
1/2 cup cane sugar or 1/2 cup maple syrup (if using maple syrup add it to the wet ingredients above :)
1 tsp baking pwdr
1 tsp baking soda
a dash of salt
1/2 tsp cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves
1/2 cup walnuts and raisins or chocolate chips (optional)

Preheat oven to 350 degrees C, and grease muffin sheet that holds twelve muffins. Mix the wet ingredients and then the dry ingredients separately and then combine. With all ingredients combined Mix, not for too long just till the dry ingredients is wet. Spoon the batter into each muffin tin... and bake for 20mins...after that let cool on a cooling rack, enjoy with or without butter. This lasts a few days outside of the fridge in a sealed container. This is usually my midnight snack when i'm playing my guitar or listening to new music.

The Hate & the Quake (Haiti) sent by Ian Kamau

The Hate & the Quake (Haiti)

I was sent the below article by a professor of mine who taught me in a class called Cultures of Resistance when I was at York University.

This issue of Haiti has been bothering me since the quake happened. It makes me upset that people aren't thinking more critically about all the events surrounding the quake, the idea of 'help' and media coverage/perspective. There has been an explosion fundraisers happening and I have been asked to participate in one way or another in at least five of them. I can't in good faith participate if the historical significance of Haiti is not eve considered let alone mentioned and we are asked to "dance for haiti" or "bowl for haiti" with no background on what this tragic event actually means in a historical, political and social context.

Just grey dust everywhere...

It's been only five days and I am still affected regarding the tragic earthquake that happened to our beautiful Haitian people on their island...an earthquake reaching 7.3 on the Richter scale plus two more after shocks both reaching over 5 on the Richter scale has caused many deaths and left many homeless...It's tough to also hear that there are alot of fake organizations out there that see this as an opportunity for capital gain, toying with those who think they are giving to aid those that need it rather than aiding the pocket books of schem-ers...This makes me sad...iTs important to do your research and know where your money is actually going...it is said that 60% of the charity sites formed after Hurricane Katrina were actually fraudulent. Yikes! We have been given views of Haiti, usually in moments of crisis. It's a country, not a disaster. It's a people, a culture. Haiti's culture is far richer and deeper than the way it's been portrayed.
I don't know if charities are safe...I really don't, BUT if you are not able to go to Haiti personally and give a helping hand on the grounds, donate to Yele, the charity Wyclef started...Also check out this article :Earthquakes: Natural or Man-Made from New Dawn Magazine
http://newdawnmagazine.com.au/Articles/Earthquakes_Natural_or_Man_Made.html
Haiti, you are owed reparations, and the myriad of fundraisers that pop up in your name are ignorant to your history, and the so called dominant countries of the world that stole from you because of how rich and beautiful you are. Alot of healing needs to be done right now and it's time to dig deep...real deep.

We love you Haiti, there is not much more you can take and I pray love and support reach you right now, even though you should of had support for a long time now...way before the quake.

City On the Move

I was recently selected to be one of the artists in
transit September 2009...basically sharing my music on TTC property.
The impromptu shock people have when I just start singing in unexpected places
is impactful and amazing...I've always wanted to bust out in song when I've been
in the subway and on streetcars, so this was the push...Check it out!

When i get older, I will be stronger, they'll call me freedom...

I had a crazy experience one day…I was kinda homeless for a little while, so I was checking my email at an internet cafĂ© on bloor street…cruising the web, I went to check my myspace (which is growing cob webs btw) and then I felt to check out K'naan's myspace, cause he's one of my friends-yippee!-don’t' know him personally though! Anyhoo, I finished my session, paid and headed out. I got to the street to J walk, scanning the cars to see who would stop for me so I can cross, and wouldn't ya know-K' naan was crossing from the other side in front of me. Huh? That's sooo weird, I was just checking his myspace. Well we stared at each other for a half a second, nodded our heads at each other like a "hey what's up" nod…and went on our way. I felt so awkward cause I had this perplexed look on my face as we were staring at each other…cause all I was thinking was how did he jump out of the computer screen so quickl -I'm strange I know…but then I kicked myself, cause I really wanted to tell him, I wanted to sing on his next album…sooo K'naan, call me when you get this. Oh and blessed job on this song for the world cup.

Sway Magazine talks with singer/songwriter Ania

The second coming of Soul

Songstress Ania Soul brings the groove back to T.O.

BY: AFRO P

In a city where rock is king and the most popular clubs blast techno and dance into the wee hours of the night, soul music has always had a tenuous existence. Canada's early-'60s and '70s immigrants from the US and Caribbean brought with them the sounds of soul music which satisfied the hunger of music fans who craved Aretha Franklin wannabes and the smooth Motown groove.

More than four decades later, Toronto is still a city that is reluctant to embrace the power of soul music. But through her music, T.O. artist and resident Ania Soul is intent on making soul supreme in this city. Ania says she found her love of soul in western Canada: "I can say my first introduction to soul music was in the church. I was born in Toronto and moved to Edmonton when I was eight. My mom became an ordained minister so I spent a lot of time at her ministry. I grew up as a singer in her church. I moved back to Toronto in 1999 and started going to places to see some local artists perform. I recall going to Lava on College to see Divine Brown and Jully Black."

Catching the sparse soul offerings in the city energized Ania to start performing in local clubs. She soon became a mainstay at live music nights where her daring interpretations left crowds mesmerized.

"I'm not afraid to express different styles of soul or to have people express to me what their style of soul is. There are now a few other soul artists in the city. If you check out Myspace or other sites like that, you see a lot of soul performers based in Toronto — the vibe is changing and soul is making a comeback."

Ania is looking forward to the release of her debut album, which features collaborations with a few emerging music groups that fuses soul, R&B and reggae.

"There are a lot of stories and experiences in my new album. Soul is at the centre, but there are definitely some spiritual and secular vibes a well. My album is coming out next summer and it will be a real representation of Toronto's new soul movement.
